President Muhammadu Buhari has called on leaders at levels to imbibe the virtues of selfless and inclusive governance for the unity and sustenance of democracy in the country.

The president made the call at the Annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture in Lafia the Nasarawa State capital.

The theme of the lecture is Credible Elections as Panacea for Search for Quality Leadership and Legacy for Good Governance and Sustainable Democratic Culture in Nigeria

In a keynote address, President Muhammadu Buhari stated that Nigeria would be much stronger if leaders focus attention to good governance, accountability and justice to the people.

The President represented by his Chief of Staff , Professor Ibrahim Gambari called on the political class to continue to take a cue from the virtues of the former Premier of Northern Nigeria late Sir Ahmadu Bello whose major preoccupation was inclusive leadership and selfless service to the people irrespective of their diversify.

He urged the incoming administration not to relent in exploring ways of improving on the nation’s electoral system for democracy and rule of law to strive.

In a paper presentation, the guest speaker, Professor Patrick Lumumba from Kenya said Nigeria had remain the rallying point in the African sub region as centre of unity, economic growth and good governance.

He stressed the need for Nigerian leaders to develop a strong and efficient electoral system for the country to build trust and confidence in the citizens.

Professor Patrick Lumumba further called on African leaders to take advantage of the region’s diversity for growth and development of the people and resist external influence and interference to the affairs of the region

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State and the former Governor of Niger State Dr Muazu Babangida who is also the Chairman Board of Trustees Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, organizers of the lecture called on leaders especially in the northern part of the country to step up efforts in initiating programmes aimed at economic development of the region.
