Law Hub Development Advocacy Center To Enhance Justice System

The Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre says it will continue to promote Administration of the Criminal Justice Act in Nigeria to enhance wider dissemination, acceptance and implementation of laws within the project states.

Director of the Centre , Mr. Osita Chukwuma started this at a one day capacity training for legal practitioners on Nasarawa State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2018 in Lafia.

Executive Director of the Advocacy Centre, Mr Chukwuma Osita explained that the Center has identified insufficient understanding of provisions and purposes of the law as the root cause of Poor implementation of Criminal Justice, hence the advocacy .

Represented by a consultant of the centre, Mr Dada Joshua Gbenga, Mr Chukwuma explained that the Centre is to establish a criminal justice system that promotes effective management of institutions, expedites legal proceedings, and safeguards the rights and interests of suspects, defendants, and victims.

The Executive Director also noted that the centre is saddled with responsibility of implementating the MacArthur foundation on Nigeria 2.0. project in 12 states of Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Delta, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa and Oyo.

In a remark, Nasarawa state Chief Judge, Justice Aisha Bashir Aliyu, solicited collaboration from the police and other security agencies with the judiciary for easy and timely administration of criminal justice.

While calling on magistrates to restrain from remanding indiscriminately, accused persons especially those with minor cases, she said they should rather grant them bail in other not to congest Correctional centre.

Secretary of Administration of Criminal Justice monitoring Committee in the state ,Mr Yahaya Yakubu Shara said the key provision of administration of Criminal Justice law in Nasarawa State prohibits arrest in lieu, provides for humane treatment of suspects in detention and prohibits the treatment of civil as criminal matters, calling on victims of such breaches to report to human rights or any appropriate quarters.

On their part, Comptroller of the Correctional Center in Nasarawa state, Ibrahim Yanusa Adda, and the Commissioner of police Mayaiki Baba Muhammad represented by the Officer in charge of Legal Prosecution Section, Allu Asaku Danjuma, all sought collaboration with relevant stakeholders and agencies for easy and timely administration of criminal justice across the state.
