International Day of the Girl 2023

As the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, our Correspondents sought the reaction of girls on their level of understanding and involvement in finding solutions and making decisions on natural and human-induced challenges affecting their communities.
On Nineteenth December twenty -eleven,The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring october eleventh every year as the International Day of the girl child to recognise the rights and challenges they face.
Narrating their ordeal in an interview with Radio Nigeria Precious FM Lafia,a fourteen year old girl,Anna John and Niret Emmanuel said their homes were washed away by flood and have had no place to put their heads.
On their part,Aisha Suleiman and Fatima Kallamu who hawk on the Street lamented that they were forced to withdraw from school to hawk and fend for their families following the flooding that destroyed their means of livelihood.
Affirming the important of girl child Education,An SS three Student , Patricia Sale called on government at all levels to create the needed enablement to enhance the enrollment of more girls in schools to acquire basic knowledge.
Speaking on the Significance of the day, Executive Director of Every Girl Child Initiative and Sherose Girls Science Academy lafia,Mrs Theresa Ajige emphasized that educating the girl child is educating the nation,adding that climate change has adversely affected the education of the girl child in unimaginable ways.
Mrs Ajige appealed to government at all levels to give the girl child the opportunity to lead by putting them in the forefront of change efforts and listening to their voices.
The theme for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is, Invest in Girls’ Rights, Our Leadership “Our Wellbeing.
