Kenya police have arrested two Nigerian nationals suspected of murdering a 20-year-old Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), student Rita Waeni, in an apartment

William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbor have been identified by the police as the two fresh suspects being detained.

The police seized several items from the suspects’ apartment, including a butcher’s knife and small axe suspected to have been used in the killing and mutilation of the university student, according to Kenyan media quoting the police.

Despite showing up in court, the suspect haven’t been charged or asked to enter a plea.

The decapitated body of Rita Wdaeni, was found on January 14 in trash bags at a short-term rental apartment in Nairobi, the country’s capital, in a murder that shocked a lot of Kenyans.

But her phone and other personal belongings were gone, and so was her head.

Meanwhile, there have been calls for greater action to combat violence against women in response to the murder.

In connection with the murder, four Kenyans and one individual traveling on a Mozambican passport are also being held.

According to authorities, Mr Asbor had lost his passport two years prior, and Mr Opia’s Nigerian passport had expired.

Mr Opia told investigators that he bought the axe online for self-defence

The two men were arrested in Ndenderu, a town about 20km (12 miles) from Nairobi and near a dam where the police recovered a head suspected to be Ms Waeni’s, along with her phone and some of her missing items.

Ms Waeni’s family have so far been unable to identify the recovered head
