The Senate has summoned the security chiefs to explain their plans and efforts to curb the increasing rate of kidnapping and insecurity in the country

This was as a result of insecurity in the country, especially kidnappings and killings by bandits.

The Red Chamber which resumed plenary on Tuesday since December 30th last year also resolved to have audience with President Bola Tinubu on the outcome of its meeting with the security chiefs.

These resolutions were sequel to a motion adopted under urgent matter of national importance sponsored by all the 109 lawmakers after being presented by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central) after about closed doors executive session.

The Senate, according to Senaor Bamidele is to engage the security chiefs over the rising insecurity in the country, especially the kidnappings for ransom, killings in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State and in Agatu, Benue State as well as other parts of the country.

The Senate expressed regret at the various kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and other parts of the country “where victims have been killed after collecting ransom as well as the recent killings of monarchs and others.

Others are the abduction of primary school pupils in Ekiti State, which had further aggravated the level of insecurity in the country.

The Senate notes with sadness the rising spate of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activities in the nation.

Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio said the meeting with the security chiefs and the President would hold next week with a view to resolving the insecurity that is plaguing the country.

“We have a responsibility to collaborate with the executive and contribute our ideas to ensure that our constituents and ourselves, including our children can sleep with their two eyes closed.

Security is everybody’s business, and without security, we can not have progress.

“We are very determined to make laws and pass resolutions aimed at ensuring rapid progress of the country and the immediate improvement of the Nigerian economy.

The Senate also adjourned sitting till next Tuesday to allow members mobilize people for the bye elections holding this Saturday.
