Vietnam’s President resigns after one year in office
Vietnam’s President Vo Van Thuong has resigned after only one year in office.
Thuong is the second president to resign in two years amid an anti-corruption crackdown that has seen several senior politicians fired and top business leaders tried for fraud and corruption.
He is believed to have resigned over his links to a corruption scandal in his home province.
Although the government has referred to his shortcomings, it says they have damaged the party’s public image.
After a meeting of the ruling Communist Party on Wednesday, the government said in a statement that he had broken party rules and had negatively affected its reputation.
The party’s leadership has prioritized corruption as a problem it needs to address.
Thuong was appointed last year to replace the former president, who stepped down due to corruption allegations.
