Tinubu Assents Bill to Return Old National Anthem
President Bola Tinubu has assented to the Bill that reverts Nigeria to the Old National Anthem.
Godswill Akabio, the President of the Senate, revealed this at a Joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate to mark 25 years of unbroken Democratic System in Nigeria.
Senator Akpabio said President Tinubu will join the Joint sitting of the National Assembly in commemoration and in Symbolism to the now-assented National Anthem legislation.
Last week, the House passed a Bill to revert to the Old National Anthem and their Counterparts in the Senate yesterday also Passed the Bill, which has now been assented to by the President.
The Bill, sponsored by the House Majority leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, was for Nigerians to act according to the lyrics contained in the National Anthem.
According to the Majority leader, Nigerians have repeatedly sung the current National Anthem without adhering to the patriotic lyrics contained in it.
According to Professor Ihonvbere, the old National Anthem, written by Lilian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Benda, is a nostalgic reminder of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Its lyrics evoke a sense of national pride and unity, he stressed, adding that its revival is expected to promote a sense of national identity among Nigerians.
Professor Ihonvbere, who also argued that the old national anthem is an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage, insisted that it should be restored to its former place of honor.
