Military Siege: Aba Traders Storm Hovt House, Deek Intervention
Some traders from Ngwa Road market in Aba on Tuesday stormed Abia State Government House, Umuahia, protesting alleged siege of the market by the military following the May 30 killing of five soldiers by unknown gunmen and appealed to Governor Alex Otti to intervene.
They displayed placards expressing their dissatisfaction with the situation and urging Governor Alex Otti to intervene.
Speaking with newsmen at the Government House, President of the Traders’ Association, Mr. Chinedu Oforndu, expressed regret that they had not been able to have access to their shops since the incident at Obikabia.
Mr. Oforndu alleged that the actions of the soldiers had caused so much hardship on them as they found it difficult to cater for their families. “Our shops are under siege by the military since May 30. We don’t have access to our shops again. Hunger is dealing with us. Governor please come to our rescue”, he pleaded.
Responding, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem, commended the traders for their peaceful approach.
Chief Inem urged the Ngwa Road traders to remain calm with an assurance that their complaint would be transmitted to Governor Alex Otti.
The military has confirmed an attack on its troops by the terrorists of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State on Thursday May 30th, killing five personnel.
This follows a move by the Abia State Government announcing a bounty of N25 million for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the killing of five soldiers in the Aba area.
