Federal government to tackle gender disparity in technical education
The Federal Government says efforts are ongoing to address gender disparity in technical education.
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman who stated this in Abuja while monitoring the National Business and Technical Board, NABTEB Examination, observed that the number of females in technical education was lower than that of their male counterparts.
Professor Tahir explained that the government was putting policies in place to change the narrative as skills acquisition for every Nigerian, from the basic level of education was top on the agenda of the present administration.”We have a raft of policies and measures to ramp up female participation in these technical courses.
There are programmes already in place. I believe in the not too distant, you will see that parity completely in all the areas”he saidThe Minister said this would help tackle the challenge of unemployment in the country.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack called on parents to inspire interest in their female children for technical education.
The Registrar of NABTEB, Professor Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe said the examination was equivalent to WAEC and NECO and the candidates had more opportunities for admission into higher institutions.
Professor Isiugo-Abanihe stated that 67, 751 candidates are sitting for the Examination nationwide.
