Judge delays Trump’s hush money sentencing until September

A New York judge, Justice Juan Merchan has postponed Donald Trump’s sentencing until September 18, pending a decision on his lawyers’ motion to challenge his conviction.

Trump was initially scheduled to be sentenced on 11 July.

The move comes after the Supreme Court ruled Monday that former presidents have partial immunity for official acts during their presidency.

Trump’s legal team argues that this ruling applies to his case, which involves hush money paid to an adult film star during the 2016 election.

Justice Merchan said on Tuesday that he would issue a decision on the motions by 6 September.

If sentencing is necessary, the judge wrote, it will take place on 18 September.

However, prosecutors and legal experts say the challenge is unlikely to succeed, as the allegations against Trump seem to relate to unofficial conduct.

The sentencing delay according to the BBC, is the latest development in one of four criminal cases against Trump, who was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in May.
