The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated emergency centers in different states to carry out rescue operations and assess situations.

According to NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, the agency’s Zonal, Territorial, and Operation offices are located in various places such as Lagos, Ibadan, Ekiti, Abuja, Minna, Jos, Enugu, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Edo, Uyo, Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Yola, and Gombe.

NEMA stated that search and rescue teams have been sent out to different states, extending crucial support by coordinating rescue efforts with SEMAs and other stakeholders in regions recently affected by flooding.

The agency added that they are currently conducting a rapid assessment to identify any additional assistance needed in the affected communities.

As part of their efforts to prevent floods during the upcoming rainy season, NEMA engaged with the media and organized emergency coordination meetings with key stakeholders to prepare them for anticipated disasters.

After predicting floods, NEMA promptly informed all state governments about the vulnerable local governments and recommended specific actions to prevent or reduce the impact of disasters.

NEMA reiterated its flood warning, urging all stakeholders, including state and local governments, to prepare for the increasingly heavy rainfall expected during the season.

On Thursday, the Federal Government issued a warning, that 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be severely affected by rains.

The government also warned that continual flooding might also escalate the cholera outbreak in some states.
