Organized Labour in Nasarawa State Suspends Planned Strike

The organised Labour in Nasarawa State says it has suspended its planned protest and indefinite strike by the end of August over the non-implementation of workers’ promotions and other pending entitlements.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the State, Comrade Ismaila Okoh, gave this indication while briefing newsmen after an emergency meeting with Governor Abdullahi Sule in Lafia.
The meeting, which had iofficials of over 25 affiliate unions of organized labour in attendance, was at the instance of Governor Abdullahi Sule to reach an amicable resolution on the demands of the workers, especially the non-implementation of promotion and the new National Minimum Wage.
Addressing journalists at the end of the meeting, The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ismaila Okoh, stated that the interface with the Governor was frank and down-to-earth aimed at improving the living conditions of civil servants in the state.
Comrade Ismaila Okoh noted that the intervention of the Governor was a clear demonstration of selflessness and listening leadership towards entrenching a peaceful and industrial harmony.
He explained that following the Governor’s commitment to addressing their demands, workers in the state had agreed to step down the mobilization for a peaceful protest and an indefinite strike by the end of August
The NLC Chairman pointed out that the state government had agreed to set up a new implementation committee for the 70000 Naira minimum wage as soon as the payment table is released by the federal government.
While calling on the workers to remain calm and keep hope alive, Comrade Okoh stressed the need for the state government to ensure that it lived up to its commitment.
The organized labour in Nasarawa State had issued an ultimatum to the state government to commence the financial implementation of workers’ promotions amounting to over two hundred and seventy million Naira by the end of August to avert an indefinite strike.
