Over 200 Almajiri children in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, received deworming drugs to improve their health and prevent infections that can affect their mental and physical development. State Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGOs, Princess Margaret Elayo, administered the drugs as part of activities marking this year’s World Humanitarian Day in Lafia.

Princess Margaret Elayo described children as gifts from God and said the event aimed to give them a sense of belonging as members of society. She explained that the children, due to their innocence, ignorance, poverty, and hunger, are easily exposed to diseases on the streets. The deworming exercise ensured the children stay healthy.

Princess Elayo urged parents to only have children they can care for and advised the children to be mindful of their surroundings and become responsible citizens. Mallam Alhassan Dahiru Alkasim, a member of the Centre for Qur’anic Reciters of Nigeria, Nasarawa State Chapter, praised Governor Abdullahi Sule and the Commissioner for their humanitarian gesture and promised to continue caring for the children.

Some Almajiri children who spoke to Radio Nigeria, Mohammed Dahiru and Mohammed Kabir, expressed their joy after receiving the drugs and having lunch with the commissioner.

The event’s highlights included an interactive session between the Humanitarian Commissioner and the Almajiri children, administering deworming dosages, and prayers for peace and security in the state.
