Tertiary Students Encouraged to Take personal Hygiene Seriously

Students have been advised to study hard, prioritize their personal and environmental hygiene, and create a conducive atmosphere for learning and staying healthy. Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGOs in Nasarawa State, Princess Margaret Elayo, gave the advice during her address to students of tertiary institutions in the state. This was part of the activities marking the 2024 World Humanitarian Day in Lafia.

According to Princess Margaret Elayo, the event was put together as part of the activities marking the maiden World Humanitarian Day in Nasarawa State. The aim was to interface with the students, as one of the core mandates of the ministry, because their role in nation-building cannot be overemphasized.

The Humanitarian Commissioner, who commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for ensuring a safe teaching and learning environment, urged the students to take care of their personal, environmental, and food hygiene. She also advised them to restrain themselves from criticizing their leaders.

Nasarawa State Head of Service, Abigail Waya, commended the Humanitarian Commissioner for creating a platform for students to express some of their challenges and prefer solutions. She encouraged them to learn skills of their choice to become self-employed before and after graduating from school, considering the current economic realities in the country.

Director General of Nasarawa State Investment Development Agency, Ibrahim Abdullahi, and Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Alhassan (represented by Dr. Akpan Nseabasi), congratulated the Ministry on the occasion of the World Humanitarian Day Celebration. They charged the students to study hard and contribute their quota to the growth of the state and country at large.

Some of the students who made submissions on citizens’ roles in nation-building during the debate included Joy Francis, Jibril Adam, and Nafisat Ibrahim. While appreciating the Humanitarian Ministry for giving them the opportunity to air their views, they noted that all hands must be on deck to find lasting solutions to some of the nutritional challenges.

The eight tertiary institutions that participated in the debate were:

  2. Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic
  3. College of Nursing Science
  4. College of Agriculture Science and Technology
  5. College of Education Akwanga
  6. Nasarawa State University Keffi
  7. College of Health Science Technology Keffi
  8. Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa

Highlights of the event included a health and hygiene talk by Princess Margaret Elayo, a debate, and the presentation of awards to the winners of the debate and all participating institutions.
