Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has declared the Park and Pay scheme operating in nation’s capital as ‘illegal’.

Wike announced this in a live media briefing marking his one-year anniversary in office.

According to the Minister, he was alerted by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria about the scheme reported to be unlawfully siphoning government funds under the pretence of a legitimate operation.

According to the minister, the scheme involved private consultants who were reportedly taking a disproportionate share of the revenue generated, with consultants receiving 80% and the FCT administration only 20%.

The issue came to light when the Senior Advocate reported an incident involving individuals claiming to represent the scheme trying to seize vehicles.

Wike, initially unaware of the scheme, investigated and discovered that agreements between the Transport Secretariat and the consultants had led to this arrangement.

The minister emphasised that the scheme is unauthorised and promised prompt action to dismantle it.
