Federal Government has tasked youths in the country to engage in tree planting to complement government’s effort in fighting desertification and food insecurity in the country.

The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim stated this at the inauguration of the National NYSC Tree Planting Campaign’ at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

The renewed hope initiative of President Bola Tinubu has as a policy of planting of twenty-five million trees before the year twenty-thirty.

The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim, said the inauguration of the planting of two hundred and fifty thousand economic trees by Nigerian youth would be carried out annually to combat climate change and environmental degradation.

She noted that the move would fight against desert encroachment and food insecurity across the country.

The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, represented by the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mohammed Onyakin, maintained that the state government has prohibited the cutting of trees.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for the administration’s drive in addressing the challenges of desertification and greener Nigeria agenda.

Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier-general Yusha’u Dogara is Ahmed, said the scheme was partnering relevant agencies in tree planting to complement government efforts to address the challenges of environmental degradation

He encouraged staff and corps members to endeavour to plant at least ten trees during their service year, to enhance national and global environmental health.

Highlights of the event are dance and drama by the NYSC Cultural Troup, planting of a tree by the Minister of Youth Development, Governor Abdullahi Sule, DG of the NYSC, and other stakeholders.
