Gbajabiamila Seeks More Funding for NEMA
The Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila says the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA requires more funding in view of the enormous mitigation efforts and interventions across the country.
The Chief of staff stated this in Abuja when he visited NEMA on Wednesday during a fact-finding tour of agencies under the Presidency.
The act establishing NEMA, mandates the Agency to coordinate resources towards efficient and effective disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response in Nigeria.
The act also mandates states to establish the state emergency management Agency and the local organising committees at the local government areas to coordinate disaster activities.
However, the irony is that most state governments rely solely on NEMA’s intervention in the event of emergencies.
The Chief of Staff who identified some of these challenges said it required the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders to rescue the Nation in the task of flood mitigation and other emergency situations.
He commended NEMA for the prompt response to the recent flood disaster which ravaged many communities across the country.
Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida said NEMA had been strategizing on many innovations to ensure effective mitigation of disasters.
