Independence Day Celebration: Women Advocate for Gender Equality in politics

As Nigeria and Nasarawa State Clock Sixty Four and Twenty Eight years, more women are advocating for the up-scaling of female representation and participation in politics to enable them contribute their quota to the growth of the state and country at large.

They made their position known in an interview with Radio Nigeria on the sideline of twenty -twenty four Independence Day in Lafia, the Nasarawa State Capital.

Women occupy insignificant appointments and elective seats in both the National and States Houses of Assembly with Nasarawa State House of Assembly having only one female Member, Hajara Danyaro out of the twenty four legislators.

It is in the light of this that a member representing Nasarawa Central at the Nasarawa State house of Assembly, Hajiya Hajara Danyaro lamented that despite the recording an increase in female participation in politics in the country, a lot more needed to be done to allow women to seek for elective positions in future elections.

Hajiya Hajara Danyaro who advised women to participate fully in politics, also appealed to government at all levels to consider women for greater responsibility politics.

On her part,the State Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGO’s, Princess Margaret Elayo frown at the manner the society stereotype women in politics, said it discourages alot of them from participating in politics.

The Executive Secretary of Scholarship Board, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yahaya and a former Secretary to Nasarawa State Government, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed said women play a significant roles in nation building, advocate for more political slots for women in politics to enable them contribute their quota to nation building .

Also, A former House of Assembly Member, Mrs Mary Ewongulu and a House of Assembly Aspirant in the twenty twenty three general election, Mrs Juliana Esla noted that women have been suffering in politics since the creation of Nasarawa State, soliciting support from their male counterparts to enable them occupy political seats.
