Over 200,000 Out-of-School Girls in Nasarawa State Benefit from FGs Scholarship Program
By Chris Nyamtu
A total of 235,274 out-of-school adolescent girls in Nasarawa State are currently benefiting from scholarships under the federal government’s Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project. The initiative, which is part of a pilot scheme, aims to empower young girls through education and skill development.
This was disclosed by the Nasarawa State Project Coordinator for AGILE, Hajiya Aishatu Aliyu Isoga, during a one-day sensitization workshop held in Lafia, the state capital.
The workshop gathered key stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, secondary school principals, caregivers, the media, and legal practitioners. The goal was to foster collaboration and engagement to ensure the successful implementation of the World Bank-supported AGILE Project.
In her address, Hajiya Aishatu Aliyu Isoga emphasized that the initiative provides crucial opportunities for adolescent girls to stay in school, which in turn helps them build a brighter future. She acknowledged the state’s ongoing challenge of low school enrollment rates for girls and urged stakeholders to play an active role in changing this narrative for the betterment of society.
One of the workshop facilitators, Hajiya Ramatu, described the AGILE Project as a “game changer” for the girl child in Nasarawa State. She underscored the importance of constant monitoring to ensure the program’s continued success.
Mrs. Justina Allu, one of the participants, highlighted the need for increased funding to expand the reach of the AGILE Project, allowing more out-of-school adolescent girls to gain access to education and secure their futures.
The AGILE Project is currently being implemented in seven pilot Local Government Areas across Nasarawa State, including Awe, Doma, Keana, Kokona, Lafia, Nasarawa, and Wamba.
The sensitization workshops will continue across the three senatorial zones of Nasarawa State, with a focus on engaging secondary school principals and other key stakeholders.
