Police arrest 3 over massacre in South Africa
Following a manhunt, South African police claim they have detained three persons in relation to the slaughter of eighteen relatives that occurred in a secluded community last week.
During the Sunday memorial service for the 18 victims in the Eastern Cape town of Lusikisiki, where the killings took place, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu announced the arrests.
He also said that news of the fourth suspect’s apprehension would be released shortly.
When gunmen opened fire on two homes, murdering fifteen women and three men, shockwaves exploded throughout South Africa. Numerous people sustained head shots.
The victims ranged in age from 14 to 64, as reported by Dispatch Live, the local newspaper. According to Mchunu, the authorities are still attempting to “piece together” the killings’ motivation.
The family had convened for a customary ceremony when the attack took place. On Monday, the three suspects are scheduled to appear in court to hear their allegations.
Mmapaseka Letsike, Deputy minister in the Presidency who attended the memorial asked civil society, traditional leaders, government to raise the bar to help end gender-based violence.
