UNICEF and WHO Bring Life-Saving Vaccines to Zero-Dose Children in Benue State IDPs

Three hundred and three zero-dose children under five years have received full immunization against preventable diseases in Abagena and Mbawa Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs ) camps in Makurdi and Guma local government areas of Benue State.

Executive Secretary, Benue State Primary Health Care Board, Mrs Grace Ashi-Wende who stated this after the Integrated Supportive Supervision to two IDPs camps said, under the programme, thirty four thousand, six hundred and seventy seven consultation were carried out, fifty five thousand under five children were vaccinated while people from communities hosting the ten camps also benefited from the intervention to relieve them of medical expenses.

The Executive Secretary thanked UNICEF/WHO for their dedicated efforts in ensuring women and children have access to timely and adequate essential health care services for their wellbeing.

She noted that in each of the camps, there is a trained doctor, pharmacist, laboratory technician, midwife, nurse, data assistant and clinic assistant to attend to basic ailments so as to take care of surveillance, routine immunization and consultations.

The vaccination carried out by UNICEF/WHO include MMR for measles and mumps, BCG for tuberculosis, Rotavirus for diarrhea that causes dehydration, Polio for poliovirus, and HPV for Humanpapiloma Virus for girls between nine to fourteen years while pregnant women were given vaccines for yellow fever and DTP for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.
