BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL MAKURDI PARTNERS WITH PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES FOR CONSISTENT SUPPLY OF DRUGS AND CONSUMARABLES

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, BSUTH has opened discussion with pharmaceutical companies in the country aimed at ensuring steady supply of Drugs, Consumables and Reagents to the Hospital to enhance its service delivery.
Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Stephen Hwande made this known during a one day stakeholders meeting on networking effective supply of drugs and hospital Consumables held at BSUTH Conference Hall.
Dr Hwande stated that the collaboration with the pharmaceutical companies, including those who are in the business of importing Drugs and Consumables has become necessary due to the fact that most of them are not available in the state and can only be accessed in Lagos or Abuja.
He maintained that the idea behind the partnership is also to ensure that the vision of the hospital of being a first class medical centre in the North Central where people would be willing to come for medical tourism is realised.
The Chief Medical Director of BSUTH explained that why life expectancy in the country is very low and people die in hospitals from treatable diseases is because of lack of essential drugs and Consumables, pointing out that with the determination of the hospital management the story would change.
Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Yanmar Ortese, represented by a Director in the Ministry, Dr. Joshua Agbadu said the ministry was in support of every step taken by the management of BSUTH to improve services and the hospital and thanked Dr. Hwande for the ideas he has been bringing forward to make the hospital better.
In a keynote address, a retired Director at National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh who described Drugs and Consumables as the life wire of the health care delivery system assured that he would use his connection to make it easier for BSUTH to get everything needed to function properly.
Dr Jimoh said going to the manufacturers directly to get drugs will eliminate issues of counterfeit which he said is one of the major challenges confronting the health sector.
Acting Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the Hospital, Professor Micheal Agbir in a presentation highlighted key Drugs and Consumables that are required by each department to function optimally, maintaining that their availability would improve the health of Benue people.
Director of Vincal Pharmaceuticals, Emmanuel Idoko, representative of May and Baker in Benue, Kelechi Onyemachi and that of Micro Noval Pharmaceuticals, Ambrose Mwargo all pledged their support to BSUTH, assuring that with availability of funds, the hospital can have access to all drugs and Consumables needed.
