The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested leaders of an illegal group operating under the name Civilian JTF for allegedly torturing and killing innocent citizens.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Shettima Mohammed Jauro, made this known while parading 41 suspects in Lafia for various offences.
According to the Commissioner, the group has a large membership across several local government areas in the Western Zone of Nasarawa State, with its primary operations centred in Keffi Local Government Area and its environs.
He revealed that the police had received multiple complaints from residents regarding the activities of the self-acclaimed Civilian JTF, which included illegal arrests, detention, and acts of torture.
Mr Jauro stated that five members, including their commander, were arrested in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old man, Bello Ibrahim. The suspects were allegedly attempting to dispose of the victim’s body in Laminga village, Nasarawa Local Government Area, when they were apprehended.
He further disclosed that investigations confirmed the group had no affiliation with any government-recognized security agency.
Among the suspects paraded were two men, aged between 35 and 40, who were arrested for allegedly defiling two minors in Lafia and Akwanga Local Government Areas. In an interview, they confessed to the crime, blaming their actions on the devil.
The Commissioner of Police assured that all suspects would be charged in court.
